Alexeev Fyodor Yakovlevich

Painter, landscape and drawing artist. Son of the guard in the Academy of Science. Alexeev was one of the founders of the Russian city landscape. In 1766-1773, in the Academy of Arts, he visited classes of 'fruits and flowers', then – of the 'landscape'. In 1773-1777, as a grant holder of the Imperial Academy of Arts, he lived in Venice and studied under J. Moretti and later – under P. Gaspari. From 1779, Alexeev becomes a painter at the Directorate of the Imperial Theatres in Saint Petersburg, he was working in the workshop of F. Gradizzi-junior. In 1779-1786, he was attached to the theatre school. In 1795, Alexeev was sent to Malorossiya and Crimea to make sketches of the places which Catherine II had visited in 1787. On returning, he painted landscapes of the southern towns of Russia after the watercolour sketches. On 25 July 1800, following the will of Emperor Paul I, the Council of the Academy ordered Alexeev to make Moscow city views. Here he worked from the fall of 1800 till March 1802. From 1802, he became an adviser of the Academy, from 1803 until his death he was teaching scenography or architectural painting in the Academy of Arts.

Astrakhov Vasily Egorovich (Georgievich)?
? – circa 1867
Painter, portraitist, graphic artist and caricaturist. He created genre paintings of everyday life of Moscow merchantry and also made copies of portraits. In 1836-1856, Astrakhov studied in the Moscow Artistic Class and the School of Art and Sculpture under V.S. Dobrovolsky, A.N. Mokritsky and M.A. Scotti. In 1849, he was awarded a medal for depicting a boy with a dog. In 1853, the Imperial Academy of Arts gave him the title of an unclassed artist for the work 'Merchants Playing Checkers'. Astrakhov participated in artistic exhibitions in Moscow and the Imperial Academy of Arts, he also placed his drawings in Mocow satirical magazines.

Botman Egor Ivanovich (Georg von Bothmann)
26 February 1810, Lubeck — 18 September 1891, Dresden
Painter, portraitist and copyist. He worked in Saint Petersburg from 1846. In 1853, he was awarded the title of academician of the Imperial Academy of Arts for the portrait of Emperor Nicholas I, in 1873, he became a court painter. Botman is the author of ceremonial portraits of the Romanov family members and admirals of the Russian fleet. Upon the requests of the imperial court, he made copies of the paintings by F. Krüger and F.X. Winterhalter.

Domenico Brandi

Painter, animalist, he painted also genre scenes. Brandi acquired the initial artistic education from his uncle N. Rossi in Naples, later he studied under B. Luti in Rome. Having returned to Naples, he had never left it again. In 1709, he became a member of Sts Anne and Luke Guild. From the 1720s, the pastorals of Brandi were well-liked by Vice-king of Naples F.B.A. von Harrach, whose palace in Vienna placed five canvases of the artist.

Brioschi Vincent
1786 (?), Florence – 1843, Saint Petersburg
Historical painter, portraitist, drawing artist, lithograph. He studied under P. Benvenuti in the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. From 1811, Brioschi lived and worked in Saint Petersburg. In 1812, he assumed the first rank in the Imperial Academy of Arts. In 1831, he was awarded the title of academician of the Imperial Academy of Arts for the painting 'Cian Being Judged by God for Fratricid and Running from the Wrath of God'. From 1817 to 1843, he worked as a curator and conservator in the Imperial Hermitage.

Vorobyev Maksim Nikiforovich

Painter, landscape painter, drawing artist, and master of architectural painting. From 1798, he studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts under F.Ya. Alexeev. In 1806 and 1807, he achieved minor medals. In 1809, he was awarded a big gold medal for the painting 'View of the Newly Built Church of Our Lady of Kazan and the Vicinities' and a 1st-degree qualifiсation of a class painter. In 1810-1812, he travelled through Russia with F.Ya. Alexeev, visited Moscow, Voronezh, and Orel. In 1814, he was awarded the title of academician of the Imperial Academy of Arts for the painting 'Solemn Rogation of the Russian Clergy in the Louis XV's Square in Paris'. Vorobyev made numerous views of Moscow, mainly the Kremlin. He travelled abroad a lot: in 1820, he visited the Middle East, in 1828 Bulgaria (army in the field), and in 1844-1845 Italy where he created numerous landscapes and genre scenes. Basing on this material, he produced many paintings. From 1815 to 1855, he had been giving classes at the Imperial Academy of Arts. From 1823, Vorobyev became a professor, and from 1853 - a professor emeritus. Among his students were I.K. Aivazovsky, A.P. Bogolyubov, M.I. Bocharov, S.M. Vorobyev, M.K. Clodt, L.F. Lagorio, M.I. Lebedev, N.G. and G.G. Chernetsovs and other artists.

Kuznetsov Igor Dmitrievich

Painter, and sculptor, he also worked on landscapes, portraits, still life and battle scenes. In 1951, he graduated from the Moscow Regional Pedagogical Art College in Memory of the Year 1905, and in 1957 – from – the Surikov Moscow State University of Arts. From 1957, he becomes a member of the Podolsk Regional Union of the RSFSR Artists. Kuznetsov participated in the All-Union Exhibition of Young Artists' Works (Moscow, 1962). He was the award winner of the jubilee exhibition 'The 25th Anniversary of the Victory in the Battle of Moscow.1941-1966' at Manezh. A personal exhibition was held in Moscow in 1972. Kuznetsov's works are kept in museums and private collections in Russia.

George Demetrescu Mirea
1852–1934
A Roman easel painter, muralist, and stage designer. He studied in the School of Fine Arts in Bucharest (1880-1885) under T. Aman and G. Tattarescu, attended classes at the Academy of Arts in Munich and the Academy Julian in Paris. In the first years, his art was formed under the influence of N. Grigorescu, later he was inspired by the Munich Sezession and Paris salons. From 1914, he led the School of Fine Arts in Bucharest (from the 1920s - called the Academy of Arts), and heading the department of monumental painting. Demetrescu is famous for historical paintings, portraits and frescoes. His paintings are kept in the National Museum of Arts of Romania, State Museum of National History and Gallery of Arts in Bucharest.

Painter. Polyakov came from state peasants. He studied at the Kiev Drawing School. From 1887 to 1894, he studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts as a non-collegiate. In 1888, he was awarded a minor motivative medal, in 1889 – the big and minor motivative medals, and in 1890 – the big motivative medal. On 5 November 1894, he was honoured with the title of class artist of the 3d degree.

Rozanov Andrey Petrovich

Painter, portraitist, landscape painter, master of monumental and easel church painting. Volunteer student of the Academy of Arts. In 1861, he was awarded the second silver medal, and in 1862, he received the rank of a freelance artist of historical paintings and portraiture. From 1865 to 1867, he studied at the mosaic department of the Academy of Arts. In 1867, he accomplished a mural for the Svyatogorsky Monastery in the Khersonskaya governorate and two iconostases. At the academic exhibition in 1869, he put the portrait of his brother on display. In 1874, Rozanov painted icons for the iconostasis of the cathedral temple in Vitebsk. From 1874 to 1876, he was making a mural for the temple in Troitskoe metochion in Saint Petersburg. In 1876, Rozanov painted icons for the church by F. Pimenkov's mansion. In 1878-1887, on the order of I.A. Kononov, he created icons for the temple on Bolshaya Okhta Street in Saint Petersburg, which was erected by Е.S. Eliseev.

Sverchkov Nikolay Egorovich

Painter. Painted animals, landscapes, battles, historical and genre scenes. He was born into the family of a staff member of the court stables department. In 1833-1842, he served in the Ministry for Internal Affairs and worked in Khrenovsky and Chesmensky stud farms. At the same time, Sverchkov took an interest in painting and made 'portraits' of famous coursers on the orders of the stud owners. In the 1840s, he entered the Imperial Academy of Arts as a non-collegiate. He created paintings with scenes from the Russian folk's everyday life. In 1852, the Academy of Arts conferred him a degree of academician for the view 'The Trio of Landlord Horses Crossing at Full Tilt the Chain of a Caravan that is Stretching along the Big Road'.Three years later he was awarded the title of a professor for the painting 'Bulky Equipage with Passengers Yoked by Six Exhausted Post Horses Stretching along the Heavy Sand Road on the Hot Summer Day'. Sverchkov accomplished many works with hunting scenes on official and private requests of the royal family members. From 1856, he became popular abroad. He was bestowed an Order of the Legion of Honour for the painting 'Return from the Bear Hunt' displayed at the Paris Salon and later purchased by French Emperor Napoleon III. Sverchkov is the author of numerous large-size canvases themed on Old Russian history. Among them, there are 'Tsar Alexey Mikhailovich with Boyars at the Falcon Hunt near Moscow', 'Bearfighting at the Court of Tsar Ivan the Terrible'. N.E. Sverchkov created around two hundred and forty paintings and more than one thousand drawings and watercolours. Apart from the pictorial art, Sverchkov had a fancy for modelling.

Frenz Rudolph Fyodorovich (Ferdinandovich)

Painter, drawing artist, portraitist, animal painter, author of hunting scenes. He studied in the Berlin Academy of Arts and after graduating in 1859 he moved to Saint Petersburg. Frenz worked upon the orders of Grand Princes Nikolay Nicholaevich Senior and Vladimir Alexandrovich, whom he followed while hunting. For several years R.F. Frenz participated in military manoeuvres as a member of the retinue of heir to the throne Tsesarevich Nikolay Alexandrovich. He accomplished a lot of paintings with hunting scenes and 'portraits' of horses at the requests of imperial family members. From 1885, he became an honorary member of the Imperial Academy of Arts, from 1912 – the academician of the Imperial Academy of Arts.

Shukhovostov Stepan Mikhailovich
1821—1911
Painter. Shukhovostov painted church interiors, landscapes, genre and allegoric compositions. He studied in the Moscow Artistic Class and Moscow School of Arts and Sculpture (1839-1850) under K.I. Rabus. In 1842, the Imperial Academy of Arts bestowed on him a minor silver medal for the programme 'Troubadour'. After graduating from the Moscow School of Arts and Sculpture, Shukhovostov presented his works to the Imperial Academy of Arts. On 13 September 1850, the Academy Council assigned him to the rank of a non-collegiate artist of architectural painting.
